Take me to the slide show
Munich
Englischer Garten (U - Universitat, Giselastrasse)
The Chinese Turm (Beergarten), dogs without leash etc.
Rathaus, Peterskirche, Frauenkirche, ...(S,U - Marienplatz)
It is fascinating to see several types of old buildings, along with modern
brand shops and the escalators of S- and U-Bahn magically appearing from
underneath.
Glockenspiel
At 11 AM every morning these enamled copper figures move in and out of the
archways performing a miniature turnament.
Inside Peterskirche
Old Peter is from 1180. The skeleton is of St. Mundita. The eyes are false,
and jewels have taken the place of rotten teeth. The murals are by Johann
Baptist Zimmermann. The service was just over, hence the smoke.
From atop Peterskirche
There are a very large number of steps you need to climb to get here. It is
not at all obvious once you start climbing since you see only a flight or two
of stairs at a time. 360 degree view available. Frauenkirche dominates the skyline.
Residanz, Hofgarten, Bibliothek, usw. (U - Odeonsplatz)
Bibliothek (U - odeonplatz)
Munchener Marathon
Over ten thousand people participated in the 42 km stretch, and even more
actively encouraged them.
Alte Pinakothek
European artists from 14th to 18th century are on display. They were clearly
preoccupied with religious thoughts - or forbidden to do much else. Sundays -
1 Euro.
(Albrecht Altdorfer; um 1482/5-1538; Schlact bei Issus - Alexanderschlacht);
(Albrecht Durer; 1471-1525; Paulus und Marcus)
(Narco Di Sione; Nachweisbar 1343-1365; Petrus et al.);
(Hieronymous Bosch; um 1450-1516; Fragment eines Jungsten gerichts ...)
Matthewkirche (U - Sendlingertor)
Evangelical. 1955
Stadtmuseum etc. enroute Marienplatz
Isartor, Karlstor, Konigsplatz
Isar gate is the only tower left from the wall that once encircled Munich.
Karls door is from the second circuit of walls. Ludwig I constructed the three
buildings in Konigsplatz: Propylaen, Glyptothek, and Antikensammlungen.
KZ - Dachau
Dachau housed the first Nazi Konzentration Zentrum, or concentration camp
unleashing untold miseries on hundreds of thousands of people between 1933 and
1945.
Tegernsee, Kreuth and Ringberg Castle
Castle Ringberg
A rather modern castle (1914) where the Duke never lived. Now owned by the Max
Plank institute. The sundial over the meeting room may or may not have
happened after they took over, but i hope the zodiacal circle close to the
chapel happened before their time. The painitings inside are interesting in
that many are of real people living nearby. Queer.
Conference dinner, Tegernsee
