Lingaraj
Non-Hindus not allowed, cameras not allowed (photographs can be taken from a
platform on one side). They are converting Gods in to petty dictators.
A big wall encloses the entire complex. A big neglected kund off to the side.
11th century (parts from 7th century). Marijuana used to bathe the God daily.
108 temples. 107 shivatemples, 108th is harihar i.e. half shiva, half vishnu
heralding the powersharing between the Vaishnavas with the dominant Shaivas.
(The Puri temple is Vaishnav).
Mukteswar and Siddheswar temples
10th century. Ornate. Mixture of Buddhist (the torana
in front, for instance), Jain and Hindu styles. Nymphs seen. A big pool
(swimming).
Raja-Rani mandir
11th century AD. A dead temple (no presiding diety inside -
used to be that of Brahma). Ornate.
Eight dikpals (indra, agni, yama, nairutta, varuNa, vaayu, kubera, rudra)
guarding the eight directions (E, SE, S, SW, W, NW, N, NE).
Kadamb and sonchafa in the gardens. The name of the temple is due to that of
the stone used: rajraniya.
Udaygiri and Khandgiri Caves
A few km from Bhubaneswar. 2nd century BC.
Peace pagoda
A recent addition courtsey the Japanese. A modern architecture and nothing
great about it. Can buy sweet local cashews here (buy them in open bags).
