History

There are a few different, but similar, stories circulating about how Mahabals got their name:

Long long ago in a darbar a man bent an iron rod with his bare hands and put this bracelet around the leg of an elephant (1747?).
In Jamkhindi, during a wedding ceromany a huge pole fell stopping the proceedings. One man lifted the pole all by himself allowing the horses to pass.
In Rohile once all they had were sesame seeds with bhakari. One man extracted oil from the seeds so that they could eat it with the bhakari.

The man in the above story/ies and his descendants went on to be called Mahabals. (Any other stories?)

It is believed that the then Saunsthaniks near Narsobawadi viz. Patwardhan-Kurundwadkar were responsible for us becoming Mahabal's from Abhyankar.

Mahabals and their descendants are known to be present at Miraj and surrounding places as also Vidarbha and MP. With time many are now found spread all over India and also abroad. We are attempting here to get together a family tree for Mahabals as complete as possible.

Kaalbhairav is the kuLdaivat of Mahabals (are there others?). Here is the original Sankaracharyakrit Sanskrit Kaalbhairavashtak and a couple of images of Kalbhairav: 1 and 2.
